History

The Ocean Bay Park Fire Department “Ladies” Auxiliary, as it was known then, was founded as a volunteer group in 1966 by a small group of women from the community, most of whom were year-round residents married to members of the Fire Department. The Auxiliary was formed to assist the Volunteer FD in fundraising, to raise community awareness of fire safety and to encourage community involvement. Among the fundraising activities the Auxiliary sponsors are the annual Plant Sale, Theme Cocktail Party and White Elephant Sale. The Auxiliary performs community outreach In conjunction with Southside Medical Center, by hosting a Community Health and Wellness Fair on a bi-annual basis. Along with members of the Fire Department, Auxiliary members volunteer their services at the annual Wounded Warrior Project Benefit hosted by the Ocean Beach Fire Department.

What started out as a small group of women supporting their firefighter husbands has grown into a robust organization of 52 women and men. Through their diligent efforts, they have helped raise funds to allay the cost of ongoing maintenance of the firehouse and firefighting equipment. The Ocean Bay Park FD Auxiliary is the largest and most active on Fire Island.
